My Allender connection in Tasmania begins with my Great Great Great Grandfather Uriah/Urias Allender b.1765 Kent England. Not much is known about his life in England before being charged with recieving and conceling slop clothing in his house in Kent. He was tried at Kent Summer Assizes (Maidstone G.D) 14th Augurst 1802. He was sentenced to 14 years transportation. He was Jailed at Canterbury and transfered to the Prudentia hulk at Woolwich. Prior to Uriah conviction he had served 18 years in the Royal Navy and claims to have been wounded twice in battle. He served in H.M.S Formidable and with Lord Rodney. He arrived in the Colony in 1804 on board the Calcutta. On his voyage out to Australia he served as a sailor without irons, due to his experience in the Navy. He was amongst those who voluntered to accompany William Collins to Port Jackson taking despatches in an open boat from Port Phillip. He recieved a conditional pardon in January 1806 from Govr. King for his good conduct. He attended Hobart Musters in 1818,1819 and 1823. Uriah recieved a grant of Land of 30 acres at Calrence Plains near Kangaroo Point (Now called Bellerive) about 1806. Apparently the land in which Bellerive Cricket Oval stands today was once land owned by Uriah Allender. Uriah requested a further 30 Acres of Land around the 18919-1821. He request was granted. Uriah recived a ferry licence in 1816 and for many years ran a service between Hobart and Kangaroo Point. His ferries were involved in several accidents, including a bad one when his ferry capsized in 1819 and drowned three people. One of them of the three being fellow convict who travelled with Uriah on the vessell Calcutta from England, Benjamin Briscoe. His personality is descriped as happy go lucky character although quarrelsome when drunk. He subscribed to the Auxiliary Bible Society. He married Elizabeth Earley in Hobart TAS, 25.09.1815. Elizabeth was born on Norfolk Island 1789, she was the daughter of first fleet convict Rachel Earley & Private Samuel Marsden of the N.S.W Corps. Rachel Earley was transported on the vessel Friendship from Reading Berkshire England 1787 after being convicted for theft at Reading and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Uriah and Elizabeth had 11 children all born in Tasmania between 1815 and 1837. Uriah died 18th April 1842 aged 97 years of age. His widwo Elizabeth remarried in 1853 she married John Evans. Elizabeth d.1875. His decendants are spread across Australia, his son Henry Allender (My Great Great Grandfather ) b.1822 was listed in the Melbourne Directory in 1874 and died at Port Melbourne VIC 1900. He married Emma Atkins in Hobart 10.02.1851. They had 11 children born between 1852 and 1871 all born in Clarence Tasmania. My Great Grandmother Cecilia Allender b. 1859 the daughter of Henry and Emma Allender worked as a governess for my Great Grandfather Richard Donelan. His first wife died in 1874, leaving 9 children between the ages of 14 and newborn behind. Cecilia married Richard Donelan in Albury NSW 1877. Richard and Cecilia went on to have 5 children. Richard my grandfather was the last of the children to be born and was only 1 years of age when his mother died in Hume NSW, 1888. My grandfathers older step sister Mary b.1863 took on the role of looking after her younger siblings upon the death of her step mother. My grandfather Richard Donelan married Vera Brady b.1891 in Albury NSW 1913, they had 3 children born between 1915-1920. Vera died in 1921 in Hurstville. My grandmother Ethel May Anderson was hired to look after the children after Vera's death sometime between 1921 and 1928 when my Grandfather and Grandmother married Sydney NSW. My grandparents had 5 children born between 1926 and 1938 , only one of the 5 children is still alive. My grandfather Richard Donelan died on 1971 aged 84 years of age in Fairlight NSW. My grandmother Ethel died in 1965 in Fairlight NSW. Today they have 10 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren.
