    • James Allender is not shown on the Census for 1850, but it is presumed he is the natural child of Thomas and Lavinia Allender. He appears on the Census for 1860 in the household of Eijah and Rebecca (Allender) Clayton and he is 11 years old. He is not shown to be with the Claytons on the 1850 Census, nor is he shown to be with Lavinia. It would appear since the Williams and Clayton families lived in proximity at one time, that upon the death of his parents, his adoption was faciitated by Hannah, nee Williams, the wife of James, older brother to Thomas. Hannah and James took John to raise and Cornelia was placed with an Amos family.
