John was named executor, along with his brother Nicholas, to his mother's will, probated in 1789. In her will, Lucina gives the names of ten slaves that are being left to Margaret and her children. On the 1790 Census, John is shown with 2 females, and slaves, 10 in number. His brother Nicholas and his sister Margaret and husband John Waine are shown with no slaves. On the 1800 Census, John is still shown with 4 slaves, and 3 freed persons. He is age 26-44, his wife is also age 26-44, and along with them are 3 males under 10, and 1female under 10.

On the 1810 Census, a William Allender (b. 1750 in Maryland) has apparently taken the four slaves with him to New Castle, Delaware, as he is shown with four slaves in his household, when before in 1790 and 1800 he had none. In 1820, William (b. 1750) is shown to have settled in Pultney Township, Belmont County, Ohio and he is shown with a large household.
