    Notes
    • The child, John Allender, appears in two households on the 1850 Census, age 3. He appears to be the natural child of Thomas and Lavina who was adopted by James and Hannah, probably in Oct 1849, after the death of Thomas in Apr. 1849. He appears to be older than James, who was apparently born closer to the death of the father, Thomas.
On the 1870 Census record, a Jane Allender, born in Virginia, is shown in the John and Hannah household with John. This could be the Jennie he marries. The Census record for 1900 shows his marriage, with Jennie S., does not occur until 1874. Since Johm and Jennie eventually do move to Virgina, it seems a good case can be made for Jane and Jennie being one and the same person. Whether Jane/Jennie has a maiden name of Allender is unkown, but given the marriage date is 1874, four years after Jane is shown living in the saem household with James, Hannah and John, it appears possible.
Upon moving to Virginia, John makes a career change and becomes a Minister.
