    Notes
    • Odessa owned Chip-Na-Fo Lodge on Gilstad Lake with her first husband, Ralph. They ran the lodge for several summers, and even year around for some years. Gilstad Lake is 5 1/2 miles southeast of Backduck in Ramsey County, Minnesota. She often described how much she loved that experience, and was proud of her ability to handle the rugged life style of the north. The lodge had houskeeping cabins with electric and gas utilities. It also provided boats and bait to its clientele. Besides fishing, renters came for duck and deer hunting seasons.
Alice and Odessa made a trip to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where she had lived with or near her Aunt Norma for a short period. They drove from Madison to Spirit Lake in one day to pick up Odessa's sewing machine. In the Northwest corner of Iowa, Spirit Lake is a lovely resort town, which provides an interesting and exciting life style to its inhabitants throughout the summer months. Many widows of wealthy business owners from Omaha had retired to live there in summer homes once owned as a family. With their husbands gone, they could live more cheaply in Spirit Lake than in Omaha. The downside was the lack of good medical care, at that time.
